Once the snow has melted in the spring of each year, the Public Works Department carries out the Spring Street Sweeping Program to clean Town streets of the residual sand left on the road surface deposited during winter control operations as well as other debris that has accumulated on Town streets over the winter season.
By removing these materials from the streets, it prevents the build-up of sand and debris in catch basins which could potentially block the storm sewers and also improves water quality and the environment by removing pollutants that could be transferred to downstream water bodies through urban run-off. The sweeping program also provides a safe and clean driving surface for motorists in addition to improving the aesthetics of the Town’s road network.
Sweeping operations are performed on all Town owned roads including bridges, hard surfaced boulevards and medians, municipal parking lots, sidewalk areas in the urban commercial cores and hard-topped intersections in the rural areas. Sweeping in the urban downtown cores are completed first followed by high traffic areas then moving to residential subdivisions (areas with curbs are performed first followed by the non-curbed residential areas).
Spring cleanup operations usually start in April and are typically completed by June weather permitting. These operations consist of the following overlapping phases:
- Flushing (downtown areas, traffic islands and walkways)
- Centre line sweeping to road edge
- Full street sweeping operation
Street sweeping is performed between 7:00am and 3:00pm Monday to Friday, weather permitting.
Every attempt is made to sweep the streets as soon as possible after the end of the winter season, however weather conditions, such as cold temperatures and rain, impede sweeping operations. Where possible, residents are asked to minimize residential street parking during this process to ensure best results. Residents are also reminded that while street sweeping is underway, there may be some noise and dust.
Following the completion of the initial Spring Sweeping Program, summer street sweeping will occur until October 31st. Summer sweeping includes:
- Sweeping major arterial and collector roads
- Sweeping downtown streets at 6:00am Friday mornings
- Sweeping local residential streets
