Committee of Adjustment
The Committee of Adjustment is an independent body of 5 members appointed by Council, under authority granted by the Province of Ontario. The Committee of Adjustment meets the 4th Thursday of every month in the Council Chambers of the Alliston Administration Centre. Hearings commence at 7:00 p.m. and are open to the public.

When do I need a Consent Application?
The Committee of Adjustment is authorized by the Ontario Planning Act to grant provisions of consent to an owner of land who wishes to sell, convey or transfer an interest “part” of their land. The Committee’s consent is also required when the terms of an agreement, such as a lease, easement or mortgage commits the land to a use for a period in excess of 21 years. In addition, the Committee of Adjustment has also been delegated the power to issue a “Certificate of Validation.”
When do I need a Minor Variance Application?
The Committee of Adjustment is authorized by the Ontario Planning Act to grant minor variances from the Zoning By-law. The owner of any land, building or structure or any person authorized in writing by the owner who has been unable to comply with the provisions of the Zoning By-law may apply to the Committee of Adjustment by means of an “Application for Minor Variance”.
Minor Variances may be granted provided that, in the opinion of the Committee, the request is minor in nature, is desirable for the appropriate development or use of the land, building or structure and if in the opinion of the Committee, the general intent and purpose of the Zoning By-law and the Official Plan are maintained.
How do I apply to the Committee of Adjustment?
Any person wishing to apply to the Committee of Adjustment should obtain and complete the appropriate application form and submit a fee of $900 for minor variances and $2000 for consent applications. Please see our Planning and Engineering Fees By-law 2016-033 for further details.
The Committee meets the forth Thursday of the month, as required. Applications must be received one month prior to the meeting date.

In the case of an application for consent it is recommended that the appropriate Conservation Authority be contacted with respect to any concerns it may have.
If there is a person acting as an agent for the purposes of the application, a letter of authorization is required from the registered owner of the property.
