Council Vacancy – Ward 5 Councillor

In accordance with the Municipal Act, 2001, (the Act) Council declared the office of the Ward 5 Councillor vacant on October 30, 2017. As per Section 263 of the Act, the following rules apply:

Within sixty (60) days after the day a declaration of vacancy is made the municipality shall,

  1. Appoint a qualified person who has consented to accept the office, if he or she is appointed to fill the vacancy or
  2. Pass a by-law requiring a by-election be held in accordance with the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 to fill the vacancy.

On October 30, 2017, Council approved a motion to appoint a qualified person to the office of Ward 5 Councillor.  In accordance with the approved procedure, an unofficial list of persons who have submitted application forms will be prepared and updated as soon as practical after receipt of the required forms. The list will be posted on the Town’s website.

The term of this position is from the date of Council appointment to November 30, 2018. To be considered for this appointment, individuals must meet the following qualifications as outlined in the Municipal Elections Act, 1996, as amended:

  • Reside in or be the owner or tenant of land or the spouse of such owner or tenant of land in the Town of New Tecumseth;
  • A Canadian citizen;
  • At least 18 years old; and
  • Not be prohibited from voting under the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 or disqualified from holding municipal office or otherwise by law.

Interested individuals are required to complete and sign an Appointment Consent of Nominee Form and an Acknowledgement of Qualifications Form and provide identification to prove his or her identity and qualifying address. Nominations will be accepted by the Clerk’s Office during regular business hours from November 1, 2017 to November 13, 2017 and on November 14, 2017 until 2:00 p.m.

Candidates may also submit, to the Clerk, a personal statement of qualification with their application for consideration of Council. Personal statements are to be on letter size (8 ½” x 11”) paper, shall not exceed two (2) pages in length, and will include the Candidate’s name and address. All information provided by candidates to Council will be public information and published on the Town’s website and publicly available in hard copy if requested. Statements that do not meet these requirements shall not be included on the agenda or provided to Council.

Certified registered Candidates will be afforded the opportunity to address Council for a period of not more than ten (10) minutes and may be asked questions by Council at a Special Council Meeting to deal with the appointment and to be held in the Council Chambers at the Administrative Office at 10 Wellington Street East in Alliston.
